Opening curtains March 4, 2008 What a wonderful find this was! Meticulously drawn expose of life behind the iron curtain and the nature of the human spirit. A gem of a book and the grandchildren aren't getting their stickies on this!
adults and children alike can learn from this book March 2, 2008 very moving and well-presented children's book on some mature themes - young children today will not remember the cold war at all, but it is important to remember and understand what was happening behind the iron curtain.
Simplistic but powerful February 6, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
The Wall: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain is Peter Sis' autobiographical story of growing up in Czechoslovakia during the Cold War. Told primarily through simplistic, child-like drawings with side notes of a running timeline of the events during his childhood, you are given a simple but powerful account of what is was like to be a child and growing up in Czechoslovakia during this time.

This wonderful book manages to be both creative and insightful, documenting life behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War in words and graphic design. Peter Sis's use of color in his intricate illustrations highlights and enhances the matter-of-fact language of his text. He has managed to create a journal, biography, and social/historical commentary that is fascinating reading for older children and adults alike.
A dark story told upliftingly - in pictures January 14, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is the story of one man's life behind the Iron Curtain until the Soviet Union fell - told so beautifully in illustrations. When I heard about this book I felt I had to have it for the unique approach Peter Sis took to telling his life story. Having come to know several Germans who grew up behind the Wall, I've been intensely fascinated by what life under Communism was like, especially the belief systems, and what an intense identity transformation people underwent to join the West after 1990. The themes I've heard in people's stories come to life in Sis' delightful and engaging illustrations and text. His spare and thoughtful use of color is powerful. That said, it's an intense topic that requires a sense of history to appreciate. For me it functions like a graphic novel for adults more than a kids' or even young adults' book.
